The Death of Sam Cooke

According to the motel manager, Bertha Franklin, Cooke came to her office looking for Elisa Boyer, a girl he had brought back to the motel. He was wearing only one shoe and a sports jacket. He grabbed her (Franklin), they grappled, and Franklin broke loose to fetch a gun. She shot Cooke because she feared for her life, and he died on the spot.

Boyer had left the motel by this time. She claimed that Cooke had brought her back to the motel against her will, forced her onto the bed, and stripped her to her underwear. When Cooke went to use the lavatory, she grabbed her clothes and left – inadvertently taking most of his clothes as well.

Others have since claimed that Boyer had gone to the motel willingly and attempted to rob Cooke.

Needless to say, you can find full details on Wikipedia.
